My mother arrived on Monday and will be staying with me through the holidays. For those who need a quick refresher, she has full access to my boys. Not my husband, but thing1, thing2, houseboy, and now scrappydo as well. She enjoys the comforts of my home very thoroughly.

She was immediately excited to meet scrappydo. She looked him over with a grin and said to me, “Sweetie, you keep bringing them in younger and younger. Are we sure this one is legal?” She did not actually need convincing. She claimed him quickly and disappeared with him to her room, ready to begin her holiday relaxation right away.

Tuesday was quiet and pleasant. Lots of talking, catching up, and then what my mother calls nap time. She takes many naps these days, at least while she is on vacation. Her naps usually include the help of one of my boys, who are always more than willing to assist.

Wednesday we went out shopping. An early trip to enjoy the bustle of last-minute holiday crowds, mostly window shopping and people watching. We made quite a striking group. My mother and I were joined by thing1, thing2, and scrappydo, all dressed in suits and looking very sharp. Houseboy stayed home to catch up on cleaning.

We finished the outing with lunch at one of my favorite restaurants. They know just enough about me there to raise an eyebrow or two, but we are always treated very well. I have been known to send my boys back to help in the kitchen on other visits, but not that day.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were simple and warm, real family time. My husband was home, so my mother very clearly marked scrappydo as hers, which helped ease some of the tension my husband has been feeling about adding another mouth to feed.

Since then it has been the usual after-holiday blur. A bit of relaxing, some post-holiday shopping, and plenty of time at home. My mother has made sure to enjoy the company of all four boys during her stay, settling into the rhythm of my household with ease.

The holidays always remind me how adaptable my home really is, and how well everyone learns their place when the right woman is in charge.
