Changing Landscape

by | Aug 13, 2025 | 3 comments

A few years ago the property next door changed hands, and NOT for the better.  Recently, the local utility rerouted overhead power to my part of the street and removed a large hedge which had been the tallest part of a screen for my back lawn.  This changes everything until it can be replaced.  The hedge was more than 30 years old – no replacing it in time to matter.  So, must get creative.  Zoning restrictions foreclose fences taller than 10 ft.  So, 10ft it will be, supplemented (faced, perhaps espaliered) by  a fast-growing evergreen.

In a couple years this should re-open much of my back lawn to play not observable from off the property.  But it cannot recreate what we’ve enjoyed in the past.  And no more tall screens because of the overhead power lines.  Will eventually have 15 ft but never again 30.

Suppose I could move.  But away from the group I’ve built?  And the property tailored to take advantage?  Not gonna.  Maybe somehow provoke them to move.  But could another owner not possibly prove worse?  … perhaps it’d be someone or a couple who’d add a cock to our group?

In the meantime …

It’s frustrating when neighbors change for the worse. It’s honestly one of the reasons we’re considering moving, and have started looking at large properties out of the city, lots of privacy and neighbors who are not in sight. Your situation – convince them to move out and then buy the property – could your group put together a co-op and buy the property to rent out? Think of the possibilities! 🙂

Speaking as an ardent leftist, I think the idea of a co-op is a fabulous idea, and LOVE that you brought it up, Boss.

I feel like that’s the way to go. Just thinking about organizing is getting me all excited.

All worthy ideas. The house next door is actually historically significant, value discounted by poor condition and consequently possibly right for a generous offer. Our group might be “heroic” (to the rest of the neighborhood) to get it back into proper shape and then get a “fitting” tenant! Exciting idea!!
