Santa Hats and Neighborly Cheer

We’ve had our house fully decked out since the day after Thanksgiving. The boys have decorating down to a science at this point, and every year it’s still fun to add a few new pieces to the mix. Lights, trees, ornaments, all placed exactly where I want them.
This weekend we turned our attention to my elderly neighbor. She hadn’t been able to do her decorating this year, so naturally I sent the boys over to help. They picked up a tree, hauled it inside, dragged boxes down from the attic, trimmed the tree, strung lights, and even set up her very serious, not tacky at all, life-size nativity in the front yard.
They did most of it wearing nothing but Santa hats, at least indoors. I do have some standards for outdoor appearances.
I arrived just as they were finishing up, carrying everything needed for hot chocolate. The boys jumped into action, heating milk, stirring cocoa, and serving mugs while my neighbor and I caught up. She was delighted. My boys tend to have that effect, but this time she was downright giddy.
As the evening went on, she suggested adding a little something extra to our mugs. Then a little more. Before long, we were all laughing, warm, and slightly unsteady. It was one of those nights that feels easy and joyful, the kind you do not plan but always remember.
By the time it was over, my boys ended up helping her back home, since I was feeling a bit tipsy myself. Watching them carefully guide her inside, still wearing those ridiculous hats, felt like the perfect ending to a very grand evening.
