How Minx Turns Male Nudity Into Female Power

How Minx Turns Male Nudity Into Female Power

Watching Minx Again, This Time Through a Femdom Lens

When Minx first aired on HBO, I watched it as a quirky feminist comedy about publishing and porn. I liked it, but I didn’t think too deeply about its power dynamics at the time. Now that the full two-season series has dropped on Netflix, I decided to revisit it with my Femdom perspective more fully engaged. Seeing it again, I realized how much it actually speaks to female authority, the erotic gaze, and the subtle dominance of women who take charge of desire.

Before diving in, here are a few definitions that shape how I look at a show like this:

  • Femdom means female domination, where a woman leads, commands, or directs the dynamic, and a submissive partner yields willingly.
  • Female-led relationship refers to any structure in which a woman holds the primary emotional, sexual, or domestic authority.
  • Female empowerment in erotica is about women setting the tone of pleasure and fantasy, rather than being controlled by it.

Minx centers on Joyce Prigger (Ophelia Lovibond), a young feminist in 1970s Los Angeles who reluctantly partners with porn publisher Doug Renetti (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women. The premise is simple but revolutionary: a woman taking the lead in publishing male nudity, exploring female pleasure, and claiming the sexual narrative for herself.

What Works from a Femdom Point of View

A woman setting the agenda
Joyce’s journey is the backbone of the show. She enters a world of sleazy, male-run adult media, and instead of being consumed by it, she redirects it. Critics have described Minx as “feminism made fun and sexy,” and that’s accurate. From a Femdom perspective, Joyce’s confidence in defining the rules of erotic representation is pure domination, expressed not with whips but with intellect and creative control.

Reversal of the erotic gaze
Where most TV still objectifies women, Minx turns the camera around. The nude bodies belong to men, and women are the ones judging, choosing, and publishing. For anyone drawn to female authority, this reversal feels deliciously satisfying. Women decide what’s sexy, how it’s displayed, and how it’s consumed. That’s female-led eroticism at its core.

Power dynamics between Joyce and Doug
Joyce’s idealism and Doug’s cynical business sense form a constant tug-of-war. She wants control of the message, he controls the money. Their back-and-forth mirrors the emotional rhythm of Domme and sub: push, resist, yield, and reassert. Reviewers often mention the “chemistry” between the leads, but from a Femdom angle, it’s more about the evolving balance of power.

Feminist, funny, and sexy
Critics from The Guardian and Collider called Minx “a witty, exquisite feminist comedy.” The retro styling, bold dialogue, and unapologetic eroticism give it a charm that feels both rebellious and empowering. For me, it’s like watching the early stages of a woman discovering her dominance in public view.

Where the Show Misses a Bit

Feminism lightened for comedy
Sometimes the show sacrifices its deeper message for accessibility. Joyce’s feminist ideals are strong, but they get watered down by sitcom pacing and jokes. A real Femdom viewer might crave more deliberate, unapologetic authority. Still, it keeps a balance that makes the show inviting, not preachy.

Male gaze still lingers
Despite its female-driven premise, there are moments when the show’s nudity feels like spectacle rather than female pleasure. Some reviewers called it “equal opportunity objectification,” which is fair, but the perspective still leans toward male curiosity more than authentic female hunger.

Short lifespan, long potential
The show ran for two seasons and ends before it fully explores its characters’ erotic power. That’s a shame, because it was just beginning to find its stride in showing women not only claiming control but enjoying it.

What I Loved and What I’d Change

  • The women—Joyce, Tina, Bambi—aren’t just love interests. They lead, shape, and command their worlds. Their agency is the show’s heartbeat.
  • The male nudity and erotic themes feel like small acts of revenge against decades of one-sided objectification. It’s refreshing to see men stripped bare for female amusement.
  • The series often uses power as metaphor instead of kink. Joyce dominates through intellect and purpose, not through restraints. I would have loved even one scene where a woman directly commanded a man in a sexual or submissive context.
  • The balance between Joyce’s feminism and Doug’s pragmatism mirrors real-life Domme/sub negotiation. Who controls the frame, who sets the price, who ultimately yields. That’s a familiar tension to anyone who’s lived a female-led life.

Final Verdict

Revisiting Minx on Netflix felt like watching a different show. Beneath the jokes and disco music lies a world where women quietly but firmly take control. The magazine premise becomes a metaphor for female dominance: women creating the fantasy, men serving as instruments of it.

It’s not a Femdom show in the literal sense—there’s no leather, bondage, or formal submission—but it absolutely captures the spirit of women leading desire. If you’re drawn to stories where feminine energy guides the erotic tone, this series deserves your attention.

From a Femdom viewer’s perspective, I’d give it 8 out of 10: intelligent, sexy, empowering, and just a few shades short of truly kinky perfection.

Taking Charge of the Gaze

Minx may dress itself as comedy, but it’s really a quiet revolution. It shows women running the show, publishing their fantasies, and turning the camera toward the men for once. Watching it again, I saw a lesson familiar to every Domme and sub who’s lived this truth: real power isn’t in shouting, it’s in knowing who sets the rules of desire.

See the Nudes!

I was trying to screen capture some of the better nude shots, and finally found this website that already did the work. Enjoy!

“Equal Opportunity Objectification.” … Yes; I get this. While the boys of my group are completely at ease naked anywhere and anytime, they don’t ever do what some of the cocksure characters do in Minx (except perhaps when competing with each other in games). In all other situations, even a touch of that “let me show you a real dick” attitude would get it bound and whipped.

I keep seeing this pop up on my feed, maybe now there is a couple of seasons behind it I get on board and give it a go.

I guess the question is do I watch it solo or see if I can get it on the watch list of me and the wife of an evening.

Maybe I do a first view myself!

Babble aside, great review in the show Levi I shall investigate it further and see how I get on with it.

I remember watching a couple episodes when it first aired, and thought it was pretty hot.

What really drew me in was the costume and set design. I’m an absolute slut for period pieces.
