Getting the New House Ready

by | Jun 4, 2026 | 2 comments

We’ve officially started work on the new house, and right now it looks more like a construction project than a future home. Which honestly is a little exciting.

thing1, thing2, and scrappy have been staying out there for 2-3 days at a time while they work on the first wave of projects. There’s been a lot of demo already. Pulling up old carpets, hauling junk out of rooms, tearing apart ugly shelving, and starting on the yard cleanup. The property has good bones, but it definitely needed strong backs and obedient boys to start bringing it back to life.

And frankly, they’ve been doing a great job.

The problem is what’s happening back here at the current house.

houseboy stayed behind to keep things running while the others focus on the new place, and I think we’ve officially found his limit. He simply cannot do everything himself. Housework, errands, meals, laundry, keeping things organized, tending to me properly, and handling whatever random thing comes up during the day. It’s too much for one boy.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love houseboy dearly. He means a great deal to me. But competence has never exactly been his strongest trait.

By now you would think the boy would have achieved expert-level laundry skills, wouldn’t you?

And yet somehow, this morning, my white panties came out pink.

Pink.

Apparently one of scrappy’s red shirts made its way into the wash. houseboy looked absolutely horrified when he realized what had happened, while I just stood there holding pink lace underwear and staring at him in disbelief.

The worst part? He had folded them nicely and put them away anyway, apparently hoping I simply wouldn’t notice that half my underwear drawer suddenly looked Valentine themed.

Needless to say, the poor boy got a very long lecture about sorting colors properly.

Still, I suppose these are the growing pains of expanding the household. The boys are working hard, the new property is coming along, and eventually everything will settle into a rhythm again.

As for houseboy – he’s due some remedial lessons on laundry.

Firstly, hope there are more details to come on the house and that your words can paint a picture for us.

And secondly, oh dear. I mean we’ve all experienced colour changed clothes post wash, if not in the last 12 months certainly the 12 before that. For me it’s easy to blame the kids, from socks stuffed in their leggings to simply missing that one bright, new item that’s ready to run in the wrong wash load. But the key error – not fessing up, coming clean (excuse the pun) and owning the mistake rather than brushing it under the rug.

I mean ive called it as soon as its happened (thankfully usually for me it’s socks) but we have a laugh, I curse myself a little for missing it and we move on.

Hopefully you went easy on him in lieu of his extra work load.
