This morning I called for my pipe, I called for my bowl, and I called for my fiddlers three. It was a proper 420 morning, and I had no intention of getting out of bed until I was fully satisfied with how it began.

I only had three of the boys available. houseboy had an early doctor’s appointment, so it was thing1, thing2, and scrappydo answering my call. They came prepared, of course, bringing me a very well-loaded bowl exactly as requested. No delays, no mistakes. They know better.

I sent scrappydo under the covers first. He has developed a particular fondness for my mornings, and lately he’s taken on the role of waking me up in the most attentive way possible. There is something about that early hour, before the day really begins, when everything feels softer, slower, and far more indulgent. He’s become very good at starting my day exactly the way I like it.

With the other two boys there as well, I allowed myself to settle in and enjoy it properly. No rush, just a slow, hazy wake and bake, my coffee nearby, my attention drifting between the warmth, the service, and the quiet satisfaction of being exactly where I wanted to be.

After about forty-five minutes, I decided it was time to move the morning forward.

I gave the command, and just like that, the shift happened. The boys moved from tending to me to tending to the kitchen.

It was time for pancakes.
