The Move Is Finally Taking Shape

The move has been going wonderfully. It has been a tremendous amount of work, but for the first time I can honestly say we’re beginning to see the finish line.
Over the past week alone, the boys have hauled three full U-Haul truckloads over to the new house. Every trip leaves this house looking a little emptier and the new one feeling a little more like home. There are still contractors finishing up a few projects, so we aren’t completely ready to settle in just yet, but things are coming together beautifully. If everything continues at this pace, I think we’ll be fully moved by the middle of August.
As always, everyone has their own responsibilities.
thing1 continues to coordinate with the crews and keep projects moving at the new house. thing2 and scrappy have become my muscle, carrying furniture, loading trucks, unloading boxes, and generally sweating through whatever heavy work needs to be done. They’re both sleeping well these days.
Meanwhile, houseboy has found his perfect role.
He’s officially in charge of packing.
The boy has always had an eye for organization, and it is finally paying off. Every fragile item is wrapped carefully. Every box is packed neatly instead of simply being stuffed full. Every carton is labeled, sealed, and stacked exactly where it belongs. He has even created an inventory spreadsheet listing the contents of every single box, so when I eventually decide I need one particular serving platter or one specific pair of boots, we’ll know exactly where to find them.
It is exactly the sort of meticulous project he excels at.
Watching all four boys settle naturally into the jobs that suit them has been one of the unexpected pleasures of this move. They each have different strengths, and when everyone is doing what they’re best at, the household simply runs more smoothly.
There’s still plenty of work ahead of us, but every day the old house feels a little less like home, and every day the new one feels a little more like it belongs to us.
I have a feeling we’re going to be very happy there.
